Jo - Passenger and Passenger Assistant
“My son is a young adult with learning difficulties, and he uses the BCL car service once a week to go to a local Community Care Farm. There, he looks after animals, does building work such as laying footpaths, and gardening and grass cutting.
He likes to be busy and he likes to fill his week. On Wednesdays, he is an assistant on the BCL shopper minibus. He has also been on some BCL outings, for example, a recent visit to the Ryedale Folk Museum. He also volunteers with the Sunday lunch club.
BCL is incredibly friendly and helpful. My son calls up, and makes his own transport arrangements. When he wanted to go to the Densholme Farm choir carol service in Patrington last December, he called up and arranged transport there and back home. BCL is so easy to access and everyone is very accommodating.
If we didn’t have BCL, we would have to use taxis. The difficulty with taxis though, is that you get a different driver each and every time, and they can be unreliable in terms of timings, so you can be waiting around. For vulnerable adults it’s important to know who is coming, and exactly when, and that it’s a reliable service. With BCL, you know you are getting a DBS checked driver and usually it is the same driver. There’s no real difference in cost, but we know we can trust BCL driver, and my son likes the continuity and routine and he has built up a good rapport with the drivers.
Using BCL allows my son to be independent, and as a user of the BCL service he can take control of his own arrangements. It raises his self-esteem and he likes meeting people. It’s wonderful that he has that ability to use the service with confidence.
BCL drivers are lovely. The driver rings him the night before he is due to be picked up in the BCL car, to check that the service is still needed and everything is OK. Taxis don’t offer that! We are content and confident when using BCL. We would be happy to recommend BCL to family and friends.<< Back to Our Case Studies
