New volunteers have come forward to help Beverley Community Lift (BCL) offer more journeys to local vaccination centres, after an appeal was made by the charity.

BCL’s volunteer car drivers have been taking registered passengers to Beverley Racecourse, Willerby, York and Brough to make sure everyone who needs help travelling to have their injections can do so.

The charity is working in partnership with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the county’s Clinical Commissioning Group to help anyone who needs transport to their vaccination appointments, as and when they are called.

The restrictions of the pandemic have meant that some of BCL’s regular team of volunteers have been unavailable to take passengers, which has had an impact on the ability to deliver the usual car service.  Thanks to help and support from the HEY Smile Foundation, which works to support the charity sector in East Yorkshire, BCL has been able to link in to the volunteer recruitment activity Smile have been doing to boost driver numbers.

BCL Manager Fiona Wales says: “We did a presentation via Zoom to potential volunteers and are delighted that 10 people have subsequently applied to join our team. The Smile Foundation have also generously given us £500 towards funding the journeys to the various local vaccination centres.  This is a great help to us as it means we can offer trips for vaccine appointments in line with ERYC Medibus fares rather than the usual donation rates for car service journeys.”
